Professor Mary Frances McMuIIin

Dr Mary Frances McMullin is a Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Senior Lecturer in Haematology at Queen's University. Her main interests are in the Myeloproliferative Disorders and Bone Marrow Transplantation.

Educated at Dominican College, Belfast; graduated in Medicine from Queen's University in 1980. Undertook general training in Haematology at the Royal Victoria Hospital under the supervision of. Professor JM Bridges. She gained her MD in 1987 thesis. Dr McMullin was a Senior Registrar and Research Fellow at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London from 1987 to 1991.

Dr McMullin is married to Sean Curran, an engineer. They have three children; Brendan, Dominic and Naimh. Her hobbies include reading, theatre and cinema.

 

Dianne Gibson

Dianne is employed as a Corporate Health Care Consultant. Dianne has been involved with the fund for over 30 years and is the current Public Relations Officer.

 

Dr Alex Thompson

Dr Thompson is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund and

Educated at St. Mac Nissi’s College Garron Tower; undertook BSc degree at the University of Ulster at Coleraine. Like many new graduates, he headed for the U.S.A for a vacation after completing his degree, worked and travelled throughout 39 of the 50 states then returned home to study for a Masters in Biomedical Sciences back at Coleraine, specialising in haematology. Upon completion of his masters degree, he returned to the U.S. to take up a research position at Boston University School of Medicine sponsored by the U.S. Navy. Awarded a PhD in the Department of Biochemistry at Boston University School of Medicine in May 1999. After a short post-doctoral period in Boston he returned to Northern Ireland in October 1999 to take up his current position.

Dr T C M Morris

Dr Curly Morris is a consultant Haematologist, Belfast City Hospital, Belfast, and Head of Service (Haematology), Belfast Link Laboratories.  His main interests are the treatment of lymphoma and myeloma, autoogous transplantation and the regulation of granulopoiesis.

Educated at Larne Grammar School: graduated in Medicine from Queen's in 1967.  Undertook general training in Haematology at the Royal Victo4ria Hospital, under Professor M G Nelson.  Awarded MD in 1975 for research under the supervision of Professor J M Bridges and Dr T A McNeill and was one of the firwst investigators to grow human haematopoietic stemcells in agar culture.  Held the Kanematsu Research Fellowship at Sydney Hospital, 1977-78, working with Dr P C Vincent and Dr F W Gunz.

Dr Morris is married to Ann. They have two daughters; Melanie who works in the film production industry in Dublin and Amy who is a medical student in London.  Dr Morris was a member of the Irish Sailing team at the 1972 Olympic Games at Keil in Germany.  He is still involved in racing and coaching.  His other hobbies include reading and blues music.

Dr Karen Bailie

Dr Karen Bailie is a Consultant Haematologist at the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald. Her main interests are in the epidemiology of leukaemia and lymphoma and the link between research and clinical practice.

Educated at Larne Grammar School and graduated in Medicine from Queen's University in 1983. Dr Bailie undertook general training in Haematology at the Royal Victoria Hospital under the supervision of Professor JM Bridges. She gained her MD for a research thesis Colony Stimulating Factors and Neutrophil Function. Subsequently Dr Bailie obtained an MSc in Epidemiology at thc London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This was funded by the NI Council for Postgraduate Medical Dental Education and NILRF and included a study of acute lymphatic leukaemia in Northern Ireland. She held an MRC/R&D Fellowship in Health Services Research and is currently writing a PhD thesis on clinical decision making.

Dr Bailie supervises the Nil RF data collection study with Adeline Kell and Ruth Kerr. This ongoing register of patients with leukaemia and lymphoma in Northern Ireland supports clinical and research developments in the Province. Dr Bailie is married to Alan, an MLSO in Microbiology at Queen's University. Her interests include skiing, squash, cycling and hill walking.

Susan Price

Susan Price is a research technician in the Haematology Research Laboratory at Belfast City Hospital. She has been funded by a grant from the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund for the past six years.

At first most of her work was involved with studying cells from Dr Morris’s patients who were undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. This has expanded to looking after the tissue culture facilities of the Department of Haematology and the tissue culture cell lines. Susan is also involved in collecting cells and tissue from newly diagnosed acute leukaemic patients for future research.

Susan is married with two children, Arthur and Maeve.

 

Frances

Frances has been working as a Secretary for the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund for almost 12 years. 

She was initially based at the Royal Group of Hospitals for nine years and was transferred over to the Belfast City Hospital to work as one of the Haematology Research Group in the role of Secretary for Professor TRJ Lappin.

Dr Lynn Gilmour

Dr Lynn Gilmour has been working in the Myelopoiesis Research Group for the past two years.  She has been investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia using DNA microarray technology and proteomics.

Lynn obtained her PhD at the University of Edinburgh after her BSc (Hons) degree in Biochemistry at the Queens University of Belfast.
