Lisburn Branch raising funds for NILRF 27 Years non-stop

The Lisburn Branch of the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund provided the funding to purchase new equipment for the Haematology Research Group at Belfast City Hospital.  The new instrument monitors the level of leukaemia-causing genes in patients’ blood samples.  This state-of-the-art approach uses a technique known as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and can simultaneously analyse the level of 30 different genes in one blood sample.  The analysis is very rapid so that results can be available within 2 hours.  This equipment purchased by the Lisburn Branch has the potential to revolutionise disease monitoring patients with leukaemia and pave the way for further advances in research into serious blood diseases.

PHOTOS FROM THE BIKEATHON 2005

Once again this year the annual Bikeathon was held in Ormeau Park and was well attended by children, bikes and thank goodness the weather.

Our celebrity at this year's event was the lovely Alexandra Ford, who plays Dympna in the television program 'Give my head peace'.

It was a wonderful day and a great deal of fun was had as well as money raised.

Chartered Accountants Dig Deep for Kids Charities

Ulster’s Chartered Accountants put their hands in their pockets this week to help out local children’s charities. The Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants (USCA) split the £6,000 raised at its Charity Lunch between the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and the Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund. The event also raised £10,000 worth of toys for the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.

David Tate, Chairman of the USCA said: “The Charity Lunch is always one of our most successful and enjoyable events. It’s a tremendous opportunity for the local business community to come together and help to make a difference for local kids.

“Each year the event gets bigger and bigger, and with our Charity Lunch in Derry now well established we’re able to give more to charities in the North West as well. We’re delighted to be able to present these funds to our nominated charities as we know that they will go towards helping local children.”

Pictured at the cheque presentations are (from left) David Tate, USCA Chairman; Siofra Healy, NI Children’s Hospice; and Frances Parker of the NI Leukaemia Research Fund.

The Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants is a district society of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland, Ireland's largest and oldest professional body of accountants founded in 1888 and with 14,600 members. www.uscai.com

Joan and Billy McGonigle present fundraising cheque

Joan and Billy McGonigle and friends John and Valerie McConnell presented a cheque to NILRF.  Billy and Joan had a 'Bag Pack' at Asda, Dromore Road, Omagh on 26th April 2008.  This 'Bag Packing' event was booked with Asda for one year.  We started at 9.00 am and finished at 6.00 pm.  There were 11 tills in operation most of the day.  We had a total of 23 people helping us on the day.  Each person did a 3 hour shift, the first one from 9.00 am - 12.00 noon.  12.00 noon to 3.00 pm and the last one from 3.00 pm until 6.00 pm.  We wore Leukaemia Research T shirts and name badges.  When we came
home we started to count the money and ended up with the magnificent figure of £1,620.00.

Also included in the photo to the left are Professor Terry Lappin and Dr Glenda McGonigle who is the daughter of Billy and Joan.

Forthcoming Event

The next fund raiser for NILRF is an 'Old Tyme Dance' in Lislimnaghan Parish Church Hall, Omagh (beside the Sperrin Restaurant) on Wednesday 4th June 2008 starting at 8.30 pm until 11.30 pm.  Admission is £5.00 and this includes supper.  Dancing to a great band called 'Country Traditions'.  This is sure to be a great night, so please come along and bring as many friends as you can.  There will be representation from the NILRF as well to receive the money raised on the night.

Old Tyme Dance raises £1100 for NILRF

Billy and Joan McGonigle organised a fund raiser for NILRF as an 'Old Tyme Dance' in Lislimnaghan Parish Church Hall, Omagh (beside the Sperrin Restaurant) on Wednesday 4th June 2008

Joan says "£1,100.00 was raised at our Olde Tyme Dance in Lislimnaghan last Wednesday night 4th June 2008. Dancing started at 8.30 pm and was over at 11.30 pm.  We had a great band from Co Donegal called 'Country Traditions'.  This is one of the greatest bands for olde tyme dancing.  There are 3 people in the band.  Bernie on keyboard, Brian on guitar and Tim on the accordian.  Supper was served at 10.00 pm and then we had a draw".

Dr Glenda McGonigle travelled down from CCRCB to receive a cheque for £1045.50, but then with donations made afterwards by generous people the donation ended up with the magnificent amount of £1,100.00 which was lodged yesterday to Northern Ireland Leukaemia Research Fund.

A Mountain of Money Raised for Leukaemia Research NI

Colin Ritchie from Newtownards is climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, in June 2008 in aid of Leukaemia Research in Northern Ireland (NILRF). Standing at a staggering 6000 metres this will be a truly titanic 12-day challenge for Colin who’s inspiration comes from all those affected by Leukaemia and the quest in finding a cure.

The donation of £3500 to date was the result of weeks of fundraising activities by friends and volunteers of the Bangor branch of NILRF who rallied together in memory of Michael Taylor a life time friend of Colin.

Michael sadly passed away in 2005 at the age of 23yrs after a long and courageous fight with Leukaemia. He attended Regent House Grammar School and played rugby for the school and his home town of Newtownards.

Suffolk Primary School children raise money for NILRF

The children from Suffolk Primary School have been very 'smart' and have been fundraising on behalf of the NILRF.

The photo shows them presenting Dr Lynn McCallum from the Haematology Department with a substantial cheque in the amount of £258.40.    They had raised this amount by filling mini egg tubes with 20ps during their Easter Holidays this year.
