CCRCB Researchers Scoop Top Prizes In
All Ireland Haematology Meeting

Congratulations to Dr Scott McCloskey and Dr Glenda Dickson who were both awarded prizes at the recent Haematology Association of Ireland Meeting in Kilkenny.

Scott won the prestigious Stewart Medal for his oral presentation on
“Tyrosine kinase inhibitors and bortezomib alter proteasome expression in chronic myeloid leukaemia”.

Glenda’s talk on “Characterisation of HOXA6 in haematopoiesis and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia” was chosen as the best presentation by a Postgraduate Student.

The Haematology Research Group was well represented at this meeting and some of our 1st and 3rd year PhD students were also chosen to give oral presentations.

We would like to congratulate both Scott and Glenda and all the CCRCB researchers who represented Queen’s University Belfast at this meeting.

8th October: Dr Brian Huntly from the University of Cambridge will visit the CCRCB and give a talk on "A myeloid medley: differentiation specific effects of oncogenes in AML and MPN".   He will also discuss his work with several members of the Haematology Research Group
30th July: Prof Ken Mills, in conjunction with laboratories in Germany, Spain and USA has published a paper on "Microarray-based classifiers and prognosis models identify subgroups with distinct clinical outcomes and high risk of AML transformation of myelodysplastic syndrome" in the prestigious journal Blood.

The article describes the development of a prognostic classifier to identify MDS patients with a higher risk of transforming to AML and was a done as part of the multinational MILE Study.

17th July: Prof Jon Licht from Northwestern University, Chicago visited the CCRCB during summer sabbatical at the London Institute of Cancer Research.  He gave a fascinating and enthusiastic a seminar on MMSET in multiple myeloma.   Over a sandwich lunch he met with Ph.D. Students and Post-doctoral scientists, some of whom are supported by the NILRF, to discuss their work.

The NILRF is supporting four summer studentships in the Haematology Research Group at the CCRCB.  The studentship will enable talented students who are in the middle of their degrees to experience research in the dynamic environment of the CCRCB

The students will be supervised by Professor Terry Lappin, Professor Ken Mills, Dr Alex Thompson and Dr Sandra Irvine.

6th July: Dr Stefan Frohling from Ulm University, Germany, gave a seminar in the CCRCB on the synthetic lethality associated with RAS mutatons in AML
3rd June: Dr Janetta Bijl from the Centre de Recherche de Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont  Montreal, Canada is visiting the CCRCB to discuss collaborative research and give a seminar on "Modulated HoxA Expression Alters Hematopoietic Stem Cell and Myeloid Progenitor Function".
27-31st May: Scientists from the Haematology Research Group are in Spain presenting data at two different scientific meetings

Dr Alex Thompson, Dr Glenda Dickson and Victoria Kyle are in Carmona, Seville at the Workshop on HOX and TALE homeoproteins

Dr Margaret Dellett and Hilary Colyer attended an Cancer Epigenetics and Biology Symposium at the Bellvitge Insitute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL).
